For the past few years Sony has put on a fantastic showing at E3 in terms of its Press Conference. 2015 saw the trifecta of The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Shenmue III announcements. 2016 was the year that PlayStation 4 saw perhaps it’s biggest exclusive line-up of AAA announcements and re-reveals in Days Gone, Spider-Man, God Of War, Detroit: Become Human and Death Stranding. Then last year we got further looks into some of the pre-mentioned titles along with the announcements of Shadow of the Colossus Remake and Monster Hunter World.

Now this year, with almost all of the Sony Worldwide Studios accounted for, with either a release coming up or just happening, do they have anything up their sleeve? Well let’s see what they’ve already said will be there, then what I expect, want and dream of.

What I Expect

Death Stranding, that’s right it has been confirmed that Hideo Kojima’s next game will be at E3 once more, in what form? Who knows! But damn it I am hyped, I find myself guilty of never having properly played a Kojima game other than MGS V: Ground Zeroes. He is hailed as one of the most creative talents in video game history, so his reputation does a lot to get me ready for Death Stranding.

The Last Of Us Part II is also set to feature, after finally playing and completing The Last Of Us in 2016 maybe 2017 I believe, you can bet your behind that I am all over Part II. Joel and Ellie provided this captivating dynamic and I am heavily invested in where there story winds up.

Sucker Punch’s new game revealed later last year will be at E3, Ghost of Tsushima. It is currently the title I’m most anticipating seeing more of, the original reveal peaked my interest and I just want to see more.

Finally, Spider-Man from Insomniac Games is the final of the four confirmed showcase titles. Announced back in E3 2016 it came as a huge surprise because it was to be believed that Sucker Punch was working on this game. We got a curve-ball and one we’ve come to understand as making sense after Sunset Overdrive. At this point, I just want to play and don’t want them to give away too much before release.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 is bound to show on their stage due to their partnership over the past few years. The reveal event yesterday provided a ton of information but you can guarantee more is to be shown next month.

Days Gone is due for release Q1/Q2 2019, so this puts it in a bit of a tough spot as to when show more of the title we have seen over the past two years. I think to emphasise Days Gone as one of their lead 2019 games they need it this year too as a final gameplay demo. Then I can wait till release.

Dreams has been years in the making and is currently slated for a 2018 release, I would expect Media Molecule to show up with an extended demo into what can be done in this uniquely creative title.

What I Want (Realistic)

Japan Studio, what are they working on over there? Another remake? Brand-new IP? A sequel? All of this just excites me, because I love unpredictability and surprises. Whatever the team is up to, surely we get to see something next month right?

I could really go for a new Motorstorm title, a solid, responsive off-road racer. It has been a while and that’s why this sits in the realistic category rather than unrealistic.

What I Wish For (Unrealistic)

The return of SOCOM, something I only briefly played on PlayStation 2 and didn’t get the chance to play any since. I feel the games were a bit ahead of their time and ahead of technical standards. A 2018 onwards SOCOM title could work so well, a tactical team-based first-person shooter is something I feel PlayStation needs. We have the open-world adventures, the single-player narrative focused titles, please SOCOM, I need you!

Resistance is back, come on, I remember playing the first one back in 2007 and with the last one releasing in 2011 maybe the time is right to bring it back. Of course if you can’t tell, I am a huge first-person shooter player, all about that and I would love more Resistance. The enemies were great, the gameplay was solid, but done now, It could be really special.

If the previous two do not happen, I at least want to see another brand new first-party IP. Preferably a shooter that could see PlayStation get that market back, at least for exclusives. Microsoft has Halo and Gears of War on that front, Sony needs something in the shooter market.

  • New SOCOM
  • New Motorstorm
  • Japan Studio Game
  • New Resistance
  • New First-Party IP (FPS)

Can PlayStation go four years in a row at bringing the heavy guns to the biggest week in gaming? They’re confident and with good reason, this generation they have bested the competition in terms of sales and first-party offerings. Can they continue and deliver a strong finale for the PlayStation 4 with the PS5 rumoured to be closer than originally thought.
